Quasi-stationarity in populations that are subject to large-scale mortality or emigration.

چکیده
We shall examine a model, first studied by Brockwell et al., which can be used to describe the long-term behaviour of populations that are subject to catastrophic mortality or emigration events. Populations can suffer dramatic declines when disease, such as an introduced virus, affects the population, or when food shortages occur, due to overgrazing or fluctuations in rainfall. However, perhaps surprisingly, such populations can survive for long periods and, although they may eventually become extinct, they can exhibit an apparently stationary regime. It is useful to be able to model this behaviour. This is particularly true of the ecological examples that motivated the present study, since, in order to properly manage these populations, it is necessary to be able to predict persistence times and to estimate the conditional probability distribution of population size. We shall see that although our model predicts eventual extinction, the time till extinction can be long and the stationary exhibited by these populations over any reasonable time scale can be explained using a quasi-stationary distribution.

Objective: Today some of the problems and difficulties in developing countries are related to the manner of their internal migrations. Each year millions of the rural population in the developing countries decided to migrate to the urban areas of these countries and this phenomenon has had negative consequences in the cities. In fact the migration that itself is created by many factors is a...

متن کاملStructure and Stationarity of Quasi-perpendicular Shocks: Numerical simulations
This paper presents an overview of numerical simulation studies of fast collisionless shocks and compares these simulation results with observations of the Earth’s bow shock and theoretical works. Especially, we review the structure and stationarity of the supercritical quasi-perpendicular shocks. In situ observations indicate that these shocks are generally quasi-stationary whereas full partic...
متن کاملPredicting which species will benefit from corridors in fragmented landscapes from population growth models.
Connecting isolated patches of habitat in fragmented landscapes with corridors is a popular conservation strategy. This strategy is also controversial in large part because of uncertainty about what characteristics of a species and its environment promote corridor use. In this article we address the question, For what types of species will populations benefit from corridors? We asked this quest...
متن کاملVideo Subject Inpainting: A Posture-Based Method
Despite recent advances in video inpainting techniques, reconstructing large missing regions of a moving subject while its scale changes remains an elusive goal. In this paper, we have introduced a scale-change invariant method for large missing regions to tackle this problem. Using this framework, first the moving foreground is separated from the background and its scale is equalized. Then, a ...
